About Veterans Memorial Building
On November 21, 1918, Hollister newspaper The Free Lance proposed constructing a building to honor the returning veterans of the conflict ended just 10 days prior. For the next several years, local charity fundraising efforts were directed towards relief of starving and injured, especially orphans, in Europe. In 1923, Jane Wapple proposed a horse show which she named the Spanish Fiesta to raise funds for a veteran’s building. The idea took off and raised as much as $14,000 for the cause in two days (the Free Lance reports $11,000 raised). In addition to that grand sum, a city bond was issued and a tax under the state’s Memorial Hall Act furnished the rest. Available for events and venue.
